How to Remove Hard Water Stains from Your Bathroom

What Causes Hard Water Stains

Hard water contains high concentrations of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. When water evaporates on a surface, those minerals are left behind as a white or off-white deposit. Over time, layer upon layer of mineral buildup creates stains that ordinary cleaning products cannot remove.

The Products That Actually Work

The key to removing mineral deposits is acid. The deposits are alkaline, so an acidic cleaner dissolves them effectively. White vinegar is the most accessible option and works well for light to moderate buildup. For heavier stains, products containing citric acid or oxalic acid (such as Barkeeper’s Friend, which the Estrellas team uses regularly) are significantly more effective.

Showerheads and Faucets

Fill a plastic bag with undiluted white vinegar and secure it around the showerhead or faucet with a rubber band so the fixture is fully submerged. Leave it for at least two hours, or overnight for heavy buildup. Remove the bag and scrub gently with an old toothbrush. The deposits will come off with minimal effort.

Glass Shower Doors

Make a paste with equal parts white vinegar and baking soda. Apply it to the glass, let it sit for 15 minutes, and scrub with a non-abrasive sponge in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly. For very stubborn buildup, a product like CLR applied according to package instructions will cut through what vinegar cannot.

Toilet Bowls

Pour two cups of white vinegar directly into the bowl and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Then sprinkle baking soda on a toilet brush and scrub. The combination of vinegar and baking soda creates a mild fizzing reaction that helps lift the stains. For the ring at the water line specifically, a pumice stone used gently and while wet will remove deposits without scratching porcelain.

Prevention Is Easier Than Treatment

A squeegee on the shower walls and glass door after every use removes most of the water before it can evaporate and leave deposits. This single habit reduces hard water buildup dramatically and cuts deep cleaning frequency in half.
