Why Grout Stains
Grout is porous by nature, which means it absorbs moisture, soap residue, mold spores, and minerals from hard water continuously. The darkening and discoloration that develops over time is a combination of all these factors embedded in the material itself, not just on the surface. This is why surface wiping does not address it — the staining is inside the grout, not on top of it.
The Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide Method
This is the most effective non-commercial method for grout cleaning. Mix baking soda and hydrogen peroxide into a paste (roughly two parts baking soda to one part hydrogen peroxide). Apply the paste to the grout lines and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Scrub with a stiff-bristled brush — an old toothbrush works for small areas, a dedicated grout brush for larger surfaces. Rinse thoroughly. This method removes moderate staining and mold without damaging the grout or tile.
For Heavy Staining: Oxygenated Bleach
Products based on oxygenated bleach (sodium percarbonate) rather than chlorine bleach are safer for grout and tiles and more effective on deep staining. OxiClean dissolved in warm water, applied to grout lines and allowed to sit for 20 to 30 minutes before scrubbing, addresses staining that baking soda and peroxide cannot. Unlike chlorine bleach, oxygenated bleach does not damage the grout binder over time with repeated use.
Sealing After Cleaning
Once grout has been cleaned, applying a grout sealer is the single best investment in maintaining its appearance. Grout sealer fills the pores and prevents moisture, mold, and staining compounds from penetrating. It needs to be reapplied every one to two years depending on the level of use.
What to Avoid
Avoid vinegar on grout — it is acidic and breaks down the grout binder over time. Avoid chlorine bleach for regular use for the same reason. Avoid high-pressure steam on older grout that may be cracked or deteriorating.
