How Often the Refrigerator Actually Needs Cleaning
The interior of the refrigerator should be cleaned thoroughly once a month, with spot cleaning of spills done immediately as they happen. The exterior, including the top and the area behind and beneath the appliance, benefits from monthly attention as well. Most people clean the refrigerator far less frequently than this, which is one reason it is always included in deep cleaning visits.
The Interior
Remove everything from the refrigerator, including all drawers and shelves. Place the drawers and shelves in the sink with warm soapy water and let them soak. Wipe down the interior walls, ceiling, and door panels with a solution of two tablespoons of baking soda dissolved in a quart of warm water. This cleans effectively and neutralizes odors without leaving a chemical residue that can transfer to food. Dry everything thoroughly before replacing the drawers and shelving.
The Drawers and Shelves
Glass shelves that have been refrigerator-cold should be brought to room temperature before being placed in warm water — thermal shock can crack them. After soaking, most residue wipes off easily. For stubborn stains on plastic drawers, a paste of baking soda and water left for 10 minutes before scrubbing is effective.
The Door Gaskets
The rubber gaskets around the refrigerator door are a common source of mold and mildew. Clean them with a diluted white vinegar solution and an old toothbrush, working into all the folds of the rubber. A thin coat of petroleum jelly applied afterward keeps the gasket supple and improves the door seal.
The Exterior and Coils
Wipe down the exterior with an appropriate cleaner for the surface (stainless steel cleaner for stainless, all-purpose for painted surfaces). The condenser coils at the back or beneath the refrigerator accumulate dust that reduces efficiency. Vacuuming them once or twice a year with a brush attachment improves performance and extends the appliance’s life.
