The Golden Rule: No Excess Water
Water is the primary enemy of hardwood floors. Excess moisture penetrates the wood grain, causes swelling, warping, and eventually leads to permanent damage. Any cleaning method that leaves standing water on a hardwood floor is the wrong method. This includes wet mopping, steam mopping, and any product that requires soaking the surface.
Daily Maintenance
A microfiber dust mop used daily — or a robot vacuum set to run regularly — is the single most effective habit for hardwood floor maintenance. It removes the fine particles and grit that act as sandpaper underfoot, scratching the finish over time. This is particularly important in West Texas homes where dust accumulation is significantly higher than average.
Weekly Cleaning
For weekly cleaning, a microfiber mop barely dampened with a hardwood-specific floor cleaner (not a general floor cleaner) is the correct tool. Wring the mop as dry as possible before use. Work in the direction of the wood grain. The floor should be dry within minutes of cleaning. If it stays wet, the mop is too wet.
Products to Avoid
Avoid vinegar on hardwood floors — the acidity breaks down the finish over time despite its reputation as a natural cleaner. Avoid all-purpose cleaners and anything not specifically formulated for hardwood. Avoid oil soaps, which leave a residue that dulls the finish. Never use a steam mop.
Dealing with Stains
For most stains on hardwood, a cloth dampened with the appropriate hardwood cleaner and applied with gentle pressure is sufficient. For sticky residue, a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cloth will dissolve it without damaging the finish. Always dry the area immediately after treating any stain.
